SASSA is introducing a new benefit of R500 against the electricity support starting on 15 December for support to households in low-income-category brackets facing high prices for electricity. In every sphere of utility bill payment, the household woes that are felt multiply all the more during summer as the electricity usage is scaled up. This is seen to be just a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of protecting already feeble vulnerable individuals from everescalating living expenses.
One Qualifications for New SupportConfigs
The new R500 grant will target beneficiaries already receiving major SASSA grants, i.e. the older persons’ grant, the disability grant, grants to families facing financial hardship, and social grants grant.
The focus will be on households who rely primarily on social grants as their source of income. Not all SASSA beneficiaries will automatically qualify. Those at the lowest income levels that rely on prepaid or municipal electricity supply will, however, be among the first to receive this help.
How the payments will be handed out :
The support will be delivered by an electricity credit being added into the recipient profile; in contrast, the financial benefit will not be paid out. The energy benefits may come in the form of prepaid token support or a deduction on the municipal bill, depending on who your electricity provider is.
It might be that the procedure is determined by where a person lives and the system to which the municipality is currently adhering. Beneficiaries will have to confirm their energy meter number or household details for the support to be activated.
Things Which Beneficiaries Need to Do Before December
It is recommended to the right applicant to update their banking details and contact information with SASSA. Applicants’ households should check the SASSA applicant authorized the property owner for the prepaid meter.
Any form of disaggregated information may delay the approval of assistance. For the purposes of verification, SASSA will use the previously installed systems-meaning most beneficiaries will not have to re-apply new interventions if the data upholds.
Effect on Households
Electricity support will alleviate financial stress for many thousands of grant dependent South Africans. With high current electricity prices, even a small benefit will lessen household expenses. The initiation of the program on 15 December is welcomed by families that are already living on very tight budgets, seeking some relief during the festive season.
